OUR CURRICULUM

The curriculum offered at Coles Nursery School combines a large variety of different learning activities and experiences to assist each child to develop to their fullest potential whilst working at a pace best suited to that child. The curriculum has been carefully designed to work towards the Early Learning Goals, which are goals for learning for children during the Early Years Foundation Stage of their education (0 years and on to Reception).  They cover early numeracy, literacy, physical and creative development, a knowledge and understanding of the world and personal and social development.

Personal and Social Development

The children are encouraged to make decisions, relay messages, dress and undress themselves and to take responsibility for their personal hygiene.
We encourage the children to persevere with something that they might find difficult, we display their work and praise them for their efforts as well as their achievements.  The children work in both small and large groups as well as independently.  They are encouraged to share and take part in activities that teach them to be helpful and kind to others.

Communication, Language and Literacy

We encourage conversation during play activities and meal times with both adults and peers.  Both Nursery buildings have a book corner where the children can enjoy books on their own or with an adult.  The children are encouraged to use pencils, crayons and felt tips to make their own marks on paper.  This is then developed by drawing around templates, writing in the sand and finally letter formation.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

The children are presented with the opportunity to understand the mathematical ideas of 2 and 3 dimensional shape, size, position and quantity by the use of construction equipment, and by activities such as junk modelling and shape making.
The children take part in number games and rhymes to encourage the recognition and ordering of numbers.  The children become familiar with counting, addition and subtraction by use of number rhymes, and activities involving equipment such as the Compare Bears, weighing and measuring for cooking, and sand and water play
